embrace imperfection

What better place to start than letting go of perfectionism, loosening up and embracing the beauty of imperfection? Let's warm-up by playing with our non-dominant hand to create a series of happy, slightly grungy little posies. Then we will move on to the canvas and embrace simplicity with a sweet bouquet.

together we will:

  • sketch with our non-dominant hand

  • explore imaginary flowers

  • have fun with collage, chalk paint and watercolor

  • layer white on white

  • paint outside of the lines!

Let's start with a grungy-sketchy series of little roses with water-soluble graphite, collage and a touch of pink!

cottage bouquet

Let's create a sweet bouquet with round, soft blooms, lively foliage and inspirational words.

"Laly, thank you so much for making me remember why I loved mixed media in the first place. I had so much fun with this first mini project. I pulled out tools I haven't used in years and made an absolute mess of my art space! I cannot wait to do more."
— Shannon R.

delight in color

Do you remember when you were a kid, the joy of opening a new set of crayons or markers, neatly organized in their box as a little rainbow? In this lesson, you're invited to have fun gathering every colorful supply that you could possibly find. Then we will look at flowers from a distance, as little dots of color, like an impressionist. Permission granted to play with every color of the rainbow! We will start with a fun warm-up series, and explore different compositions, then we will take our favorite and blow it up on a much bigger canvas!

At the end of this lesson, I will share plenty of fun finishing touches: this last layer can really help bring a painting together, make it feel finished and above all, make it feel truly yours.

together we will:

  • put on our impressionist glasses

  • have fun with the rainbow (such a forgiving color scheme!)

  • combine color and light

  • layer collage, paints, inks and more

  • play with scale, from a mini study to a larger canvas

  • explore finishing touches: so important to build your own unique, recognizable style!

rainbow impressions

Let's reconnect to childlike joy! Painting flowers is as easy as dabbing little dots with your bush… or your fingers!

a thousand blooms

With layer upon layer of light and color, let's create a an uplifting rainbow floral!

"I'm in a place of peace and pleasure as I look at my completed Rainbow Meadow. Each step during this creative process, I'd walk away and come back in to look at it, add something, cover over something, touch up paints... then on to the next step. Moments when I was unsure and hesitant with a brush or piece of collage or color of paint, then watching your videos again and finding a creative solution. Learning how to step back, relax, experiment and not rush the process. Adding myself to the project and pulling in what made me happy. I need to express how grateful I am to have found you and your classes. Looking forward to the next project!"

explore texture & contrast

Who said florals couldn't be a little dark and grungy? Let's create something completely different, drawing inspiration from wildflowers, their untamed beauty, movement and graphic lines. In this lesson we will explore texture and contrast, two key element of art, especially mixed media art! Combining paper, fibers and other yummy materials, we will start with a fun warmup exercise in black and white, and turn it into mini collage artworks. Then we will keep going on this wildflower ride with a deep and beautifully textured painting.

Together we will:

  • create a super textured "blank" canvas with fabric, cardboard and more

  • etch our designs and let ink run into the grooves

  • play with neutrals, light and dark

  • stitch into our paintings

  • use flowers as our painting tools to create unique papers!

a little wild

Starting with a black background, let's etch our little flowers into a fresh coat of white. Then we will combine them with plenty of yummy materials!

from the field

Let's dive deeper as we keep exploring texture, lines and contrast, all through the magic of mixed media layering!

"I love all of Laly's classes, but Flower Flow is my favorite among all others. I really enjoyed her "A Little Wild" lesson. You can get very creative by sketching flowers on a textured white background. Creating pattern and playing with different colors and media are very fun. Working with alcohol ink and getting to know its unpredictable nature was the most exciting part of the project. I learned many different techniques in Flower Flow and I loved it."

dare to bloom!

What would it take for us to really grow and bloom creatively? Flowers have a way of blossoming again and again, delicate, joyful and colorful no matter what: in a crack of the pavement, or right after a storm. We may not always have the perfect space, the quiet time, the skills or the right art supplies, but what if we dared to bloom and create anyway, right now, right where we are planted?

Inspired by the process of art journaling, we're going to fill a page with words, color and flowers, taking a moment to reflect on what makes us bloom. Then we will cut the page into mini paintings! And for our final project, we will create a flowy floral abstract that combines everything we've explored in the class: color, texture, light, lines, contrast, and above all, the joy and playfulness of mixed media art!

together we will:

  • let ourselves be inspired by the process of art journaling, and incorporate words into our art

  • enjoy a favorite color combination

  • combine intuition and serendipity with the more structured look of a grid composition

  • optional: add an image as our focal point (but you can also skip this step and keep your painting more abstract)

  • finger-paint flowers over collage…

  • … and dare to bloom!

keep blooming!

I'm thrilled to include two additional floral lessons! I created these for collaborative classes hosted by other artists, and I'm delighted to now be able to share them with you. Keep blooming with art journaling and the making of a sweet altered book

little book of blooms

Inspired by the naturalist work of Beatrix Potter, let's create a charming altered book full of romantic flowers.

"The little Roses Book class was the perfect medicine I needed today. A calm lovely voice, gorgeous music, colors, flowers, paints. Permission to play, to be messy, imperfect, to have fun... and to laugh! I so enjoy your gentle ways. You make it look so easy and your calm acceptance of things is such an inspiration: "Oh look what happened, let's go that way!" FLOW is the word that comes to mind."
— Laury K.

GATHER YOUR MATERIALS

Here is a list of suggested supplies. Make sure to first use what you've got and already love, and get ready to bloom!

"Your classes make me grow in artistic maturity, the sense of intuitively feeling my art tools, enjoying my fingers and letting them tell their own story from the heart. You give us endless possibilities."
— Wajiha S.

art & words from the students!

"Flower Flow is such a fun, happy and joy-filled class! It is impossible not to feel inspired and creative as Laly takes you through each lesson. Each section is very unique and individual with many different techniques and styles. Etching into white gesso and then playing with inks and colors in the grooves was especially fun and completely different than anything I had done. One of my very favorite classes ever!! Laly, thank you for all the time, effort and work you put into your classes. You are truly the best."
— Barbara A.
"Flower Flow with Laly is one of my favorite courses I've taken. Art and painting aside, her lilting voice calms me, her stories open up my imagination in nature. She just puts me in a great space to let me and my feelings come out into my art! Hard to describe… she makes me feel soft and artistic and real."
— Kelly P.
"Laly has a bright, cheerful disposition that makes it easy to learn. With a non intimidating approach, she has given me the confidence to start playing with mixed media. Prefect for beginners. She gives enough information without talking too much and never a bore. I already own most of her workshops with the hopes of new workshops on the way. Thank you Laly."
— Lorra Lee R.
"I have enjoyed these lessons immensely! I find myself going over sections of the course and enjoying how different the result is each time I do something—even though the process is the same. I particularly enjoyed the freedom of using charcoal sticks in Shabby Blooms and working in a mini series. The little thumbnail colours in Rainbow Meadow, interspersed with paint colour, were magical. Overall, I have enjoyed experimenting with different mediums and techniques… but the biggie is trusting the process."
— Elizabeth F.
"Flower Flow really took me out of my comfort zone. I went from never painting a flower before to a literal garden of work around my studio. I absolutely loved the warm up lessons as inspiration and even framed a few of my mini series. I completed every single exercise and painting in Flower Flow - I did not want it to end!"
— Tracy V.
"This was my first venture onto canvas instead of an art journal and it was terrifying and WONDERFUL! I kept a vase with blushing pink roses on my desk the whole time to inspire me. Thank you Laly!"
— Kathryn A.
"I am so excited to tell you how much confidence I have gained from taking this class. Mixed media used to be a challenge and now I love it. It's a great way to dive in and to be able to work at your own pace. I have watched and rewatched the videos figuring out my own style. I would recommend this to all skill levels. Thank you Laly for this class. "
— Denise B.
"Flower Flow has taught me to trust the intuitive process of my art. From messy sketches made using my non-dominant hand to a beautiful canvas I am proud to display in my home. I love writing words that infuse energy and meaning into the art. Each layer holds its own beauty, your techniques have given me confidence in expression rather than perfection. I love the feeling when a mistake becomes a beautiful part of of the finished piece."
— Raewyn S.
"I love Laly's style and have always wondered how she achieves certain things. In this class I got the answers to so many technique questions and had a chance to practice them for myself. Lots of very helpful practical tips!"
— Stephanie W.
"I am proud of the "mistakes" that shifted my mindset and moved me to discover my own style. With Flower Flow, seeds of hope were planted. I began nurturing my process daily and gradually, I began to look at my efforts with satisfaction. Embracing the process and getting lost in a journey of self discovery has brought me great joy."

Hi, I'm Laly, your guide for this floral journey!

I'm a mixed media artist living in the beautiful Loire Valley of France. When I'm not in the studio, you will most often find me in the garden!

Flowers may be small and ephemeral, but they're also powerful and meaningful: they are messengers of hope, love, joy and compassion, they express beauty and our connection to nature. I think today more than ever, our world is in deep need of these things, and that's the real "why", the deeper inspiration behind this class. I cannot wait to see all the beautiful and unique paintings that are about to bloom from the students.

Let's shower the world in flowers!
